Pair Goldscheider-Everlast Zebra Busts c 1945

A matched pair of molded ceramic zebras that somewhat different painted stripes due to the free flowing black glaze and being handmade. Then again every zebra in nature has unique stripes too.

 

The light weight molded ceramic zebra heads have been glazed with a base crackle white glaze and then painted with a thin black glaze that ran. The edges of the black take on a bluish gray coloration.

 

The bases of both are unglazed. One has two firing holes and the other head only one.  One base has the numbers 53, 22 and 10 impressed in it. This head has a black stamped GOLDSCHEIDER-EVERLAST CORP on the base with a copyright symbol. This head also has a silver foil label on the side near the base. The other head has the words GOLDSCHEIDER-EVERLAST CORP and the Goldscheider trademark (with U.S.A) stamped in black on the base. This head also has the number 537 impressed in the base.

 

In 1941 Goldscheider-U.S.A became Goldscheider-Everlast Corporation and then Goldcrest Ceramics Corporation in 1947. That would date these busts to between 1941 and 1947.

 

 

6” (15.2 cm) long x 2 ¾” (7.0 cm) wide x 8 ½” (21.6 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lbs 14 oz (1300 g)

 

 

There are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. The heads are vibrant and colorful. The foil tag on the one head is worn on one edge but still highly readable. I don’t believe the other head ever had a foil tag because the trademark was stamped on the base instead.

 

A fun pair of zebras to decorate many decors from mid century to traditional. They have such a presence.
