Victorian Aesthetic Movement Transferware Mikado Platter Circa 1870

An Aesthetic Movement platter that shows the influence of Japan on the Victorian English. I love the bucolic ideal of a Japanese garden and teahouse.

 

The large and heavy molded ceramic platter has been covered in a sepia toned transfer. The central panel has bamboo, prunus tree and a Japanese teahouse with lanterns. There is a second building off in the distance. The cavetto is decorated with alternating lozenge panels of round fans and scrolls. Fabric-like patterns surrounding these lozenge shapes. There is no foot. The base is glazed.

 

A mark on the base reads MIKADO THOMAS FURNIVAL & SONS surrounding a diamond shape with numbers in segments. A large R is in the center. The letter D is impressed into the clay.

 

13 3/8” (34 cm) wide x 9 ½” (24.1 cm) tall  x 1 ½” (3.8 cm) deep. Weighs 2 lb 9.0 oz (1150 g)

 

There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. There is a particularly deep wear scratch under the rim. The glaze on the area around the scratch is a slightly different color and so it might be a repair to a chip – or it could simply be a stain. There is wear the central well and to the edge of the base. The underside of the rim shows staining and color spotting from pieces of the transfer. There are transfer errors like spots and misses. Otherwise, the platter is in good shape with a bright and shiny look.
