A very modernistic carved soapstone seal by the Inuit of Alaska that is very artistic; capturing the essence of a seal.

A greenish soapstone with striations has been carved into the shape of a seal out of water. The artist has etched a series of circles on the back to simulate the fur pattern on the seal. There are etched eyes and carved claws, whiskers and mouth. The underside is flat and shows wear from years of sitting on a surface.

MEASUREMENTS

6 1/8” (15.6 cm) long x 1 3/8” (3.4 cm) wide x 2 ¼” (5.7 cm) tall. Weighs 14.4 oz (405 g)

CONDITION

There is a chip on the tail. There are no other breaks, cracks, or chips. The entire body has light wear scratches you can see under magnification, but no deep scratches.

A great work of Inuit art that has a rich feel and a modernist look.
