A much-loved Chinese bowl with an elaborate landscape scene that was repaired in the early 19th century with staples.
The hand potted and hand painted porcelain bowl has been painted with under glaze cobalt in a design of boats sailing, pagodas, houses, a fisherman, bridge, mountains, trees, and geese flying in a V formation. The glaze is thick and very soft.
The bowl has an unglazed, raised foot. The base is glazed and has a four-character mark encircled by a double ring.
6 5/8” (16.8 cm) diameter x 2 7/8” (7.3 cm) tall. Weighs 11.7 oz (335 g)
The bowl was broken into four large pieces and then pieced back together with staples. There is wear and a chip to the central well. The bowl is a study on early European or American porcelain repairs. The glazes remain in good condition, although wear and many light scratches are visible under magnification
The bowl has much age and interest due to the staples. It feels so good in the hand.
