A colorful and delicately hand painted, Japanese dish with a diamond shape. I like how the central design has an almost Kakiemon style with restrained decoration.

The molded porcelain dish is decorated in colored enamels with a central design of a shock of rice straw surrounded by chrysanthemums, grasses and butterflies. The piece has gilding which accents the under glaze cobalt. The cavetto has alternating panels of mythical beasts and baskets with gourds. The underside has what looks like locks and geometric shapes.

The raised foot is unglazed with no labels or marks.

MEASUREMENTS

6 3/8” (16.1 cm) wide x 5 3/8” (13.5 cm) deep x 1 5/8” (4.1 cm) tall. Weighs 8.9 oz (250 g)

CONDITION

There are no chips, or breaks. There is a ½” long hairline on the outside that starts at the rim. I don’t see it going through to the inside. The rim also has one tiny rough spot. The gilding over the blue under glaze cobalt shows moderate wear, and there is also light wear in the central well. There are kiln flaws, such as bumps, black spots and reserve spots.

A very artistic, colorful dish to decorate with or add to a collection. I like the artistry that less is more.
