A large hand thrown salt glaze crock with added cobalt decoration of maple seeds as ornamentation.

A local clay has been hand thrown on a potter’s wheel and then coated in salt to give a shiny, dark brown glaze when fired. The crock has handles on each side which also have splotches of cobalt at their base. The number 4 within a circle has been stamped into the wet clay before firing. The base is flat and shows the red of the clay. The crock is very heavy and now has a tin band encircling near the base. The tin band has an old rivet to hold it together.

MEASUREMENTS

14 ¾” tall x 10 ½” diameter. Weighs 14 lbs 8 oz (6600 g)

CONDITION

There is an extensive crack under the crock through the base and up to one of the handles. That is probably why they put on a tin band. There Is a lighter spot on one side of the crock where the heat in the kiln must have been uneven and discolored the glaze.

A large antique crock that has a wonderful, unique decoration that was all made and done by hand. A real folk-art treasure.
