A plate or shallow bowl with a thick, smooth glaze that is hand painted and hand potted. The cobalt used is a dark blackish blue.

A round porcelain plate with a mouth that slopes to the central well. A dark black blue cobalt has been used to paint designs of spiked petal flowers. There are rings painted around the central medallion, the mouth rim, and on the base and underside. The glaze is thick, soft, smooth and looks shiny. The glaze has a bluish tinge. The dark cobalt used reminds me of that used during the Ming period (although the plate is from a later period).

The plate has an unglazed shallow cut foot ring. The base is glazed. The plate has a medium weight. There is a mark in a square on the base in the center.

MEASUREMENTS
7 1/8” (18.1 cm) diameter x 1 5/16” (3.3 cm) tall. Weighs 11.7 oz (330 g)

CONDITION
There is a rim chip that has darkened with age. There are no cracks or breaks. The plate rings like a bell. There are kiln flaws such as pin holes, bumps, reserves, and black dots. There are wear scratches in the central well. There is also wear on the mouth rim.

A great piece of Chinese blue and white that will look great in a décor with other blue and white pieces.  The bold design looks almost modern – although it’s well over 100 years old.
