A handmade and painted lacquer box with an interesting scalloped shape and an auspicious design of crane and peach.

The box was made from a cardboard material that was coated with black and red lacquer, and green and white lacquer accents. The design on the cover is of a crane with a pair of peaches in its beak. An arrangement of feathers surrounds the central design, and a star pattern circles the edge. The sides have a design of a scrolling vine interspersed with feathers. The interior is coated in black lacquer. The base is flat and lacquered in black. The box has a scalloped edge shape.

MEASUREMENTS

5 ¼” (13.3 cm) diameter x 1 ¾” (3.2 cm) tall. Weighs 9.8 oz (280 g)

CONDITION

There are losses to the lacquer around the inner lid flange, the flange on the box base, the edges to the lid, and on the edge of the inside of the lid. The losses to the inside do not show when the lid is on. There are tiny frits on the edge of the base. The main surfaces are in good shape; it’s just the edges that show the lacquer losses. The base shows wear from being slid on a table.

A colorful old lacquer box that is enhanced by lovely crane design.
