Japanese Polychrome Imari Plate with Foliate Rim 19th Century

A very colorful foliate rimmed Japanese Imari plate that is so well hand painted. Don’t stare too long or it could hypnotize.

 

The thick molded porcelain dish has been painted in under glaze cobalt and a myriad of over glaze enamels. The design is like an elaborate fabric print painted with overglaze iron red, greens and gilt. The rim has a foliate edge painted with under glaze cobalt and gilt. The back has decorations of fruit painted with under glaze cobalt.

 

The unglazed foot is shallow and shows a nice white porcelain paste. There are no marks or labels.

 

 

9 ¾” (24.8 cm) diameter x 1 ¾” (4.4 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 5.5 oz (620 g)

 

 

There are no cracks, breaks or repairs. There is a rim chip that is a bit camouflaged by the busy pattern. The enamels and gilding show only mild wear, except along the rim where the gilding is more worn.
