A fun, antique, collectible transferware plate from the Victorian era that has that iconic Punch Puppet design. I love the puppet show portrayal with the puppet masters arm showing.

A ceramic molded pearl ware plate has been decorated with a blue fired-on transfer of a Punch puppet show with a little dog dressed as a clown. This particular design is significantly more rare than many plates that depict Punch.

The alphabet has been molded into the cavetto. There are three spur marks, as well as a blue transfer mark. The only legible word is the word ENGLAND.

MEASUREMENTS

6 ¾ in (17.1 cm) diameter x .6 (1.5 cm) in. Weighs 6.8 oz (195 g)

CONDITION

There is a concussion mark in the glaze on the base underneath; however it doesn’t extend through the plate to the front. There is wear to the transfer design and many wear scratches in the well. There is staining on the top edge as well as spots on the well and base. The little marks on the well and base correspond to where the kiln spurs would have rested. There are the standard manufacture flaws, such as smudges in the transfer, black spots, and pin holes. There is crazing on the plate underside and  on the alphabet cavetto.

A fun plate depicting the famous Punch in a small puppet theater. I love the little dog.
