A mostly handmade Chinese wooden abacus with metal fittings and large black wooden beads. It’s quite well made and sturdy. It was meant to be used and to last.
The hardwood frame has been fitted with bamboo rods and one brass rod. There are seven large black painted beads per rod that are used for counting. The abacus is adorned with brass fittings and the wood frame has been stained a dark color.
A metal plaque affixed to the frame edge is in both Chinese and English. The English reads LOTUS-FLOWER BRAND MADE IN PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. There is a decoration of a lotus flower.
MEASUREMENTS
10 ½” (26.7 cm) long x 7 ¼” (18.4 cm) wide x 1 ¼” (3.2 cm) thick. Weighs 1 lb 1.3 oz (490 g)
CONDITION
The brass has discoloration from oxidization. One brass corner is missing a small brass brad and is raised. There is loss and wear in spots to the finish on the wood frame. The abacus was used and not just for decoration.
An abacus that can still be used or used to accent a wall or table. It would make a fun gift for an accountant too.
