An ornate silverplate teapot by Rogers Smith out of Meriden Connecticut. It is from the Aesthetic Movement period of the late 19th century and has a very Japanese feel.

The teapot has Japanese designs, such as cranes, chrysanthemums, a butterfly, cattails, birds flying and a cherry blossom on the handle. The body of the teapot has been tooled with a honeycomb design. The handle has two bone inserts to keep the handle from getting hot. The hinged lid has a knob finial and a diamond raised shape to keep the lid from damaging the handle. The spout is generous with a large opening. The neck of the spout has an ornate floral design with raised elements and ribs.

A stamped tooled mark on the base has a shield design and reads ROGER SMITH CO. MERIDEN CT. QUADRUPLE with the production number 1942.

MEASUREMENTS

9 ½” (24.1 cm) long x 5 ½” (14.0 cm) diameter x 7 ¾” (19.7 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 13.7 oz (840 g)

CONDITION

The silverplate has been polished off. There are no cracks or breaks but there are several shallow dents. One is near the butterfly, two below a flying crane, a shallow one under the chrysanthemums and one on the bottom. The interior of the lid and body have a white patina from mineral deposits.

A great Victorian teapot to add to a collection or add to your display with an Aesthetic Movement Japanese influenced teapot.
