A colorful and detailed wooden duck that is a work of folk art. I love the colors and details.
A wooden block has been hand carved into the shape of a duck. The painter added lines for feathers and dots for eyes. The colors are now muted and aged. There is a line around the neck which looks like the piece was carved separately and then added to the base, or had an accident and was reattached.
The base is flat with no weights or place for weights like on a used decoy. The maker even painted the base which shows time and thought. A small piece missing from the base and shows a softwood of some sort.
MEASUREMENTS
15 ½” (39.4 cm) long x 7 ½” (19.0 cm) wide x 8” (20.3 cm) tall. Weighs 3 lb 14 oz (1750 g)
CONDITION
The duck shows a nice, aged patina to the paintings. The base has a piece of wood missing and there are also paint losses on the base. There is paint missing on the outer edge feathers of the tail, as well as tiny chips to the paint throughout. The seam where the head attaches to the body is a bit uneven and there are some paint mistakes. There is also a small crack to the tip of his beak. Overall, it’s in very good condition for being over 100 years old.
A striking antique folk art mallard duck to add to your collection or use to decorate the den.
