A porcelain haisen sake washing bowl with an intricately painted seaside scene. It’s like a scroll painting on porcelain.

The molded fine white paste porcelain has been hand painted with polychrome enamels in a design of the ocean with islands, a gilded boat, and gilded figures fishing. The cup has intricate borders on the mouth and foot. The base, which is hollow, has a firing hole. The base and shallow rounded foot are both glazed.

There is a three-character Japanese mark on the base.

MEASUREMENTS

5 ¼” (13.3 cm) diameter x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) tall. Weighs 11.9 oz (335 g)

CONDITION

There is a tiny rim chip at the beginning of a hairline on the front by the boat and figures. There are no other cracks breaks. There is wear to the gilding of the border around the foot border and three glaze chips along that border. There are two tiny glaze chips on the mouth rim. The enamels are still shiny and bright.

The paintings are so incredibly small and fine. A tour de force of the Japanese artist.
