An unusual Victorian silver plate piece that you don't often see, an incense burner.
The piece has a trumpet spout on top to let the smoke out. The box itself is rectangular with a latched door on one side. There is a handle that has florid mounts near the base and a bead at the top. The box rests on four elaborate feet.
A stamped mark on the base reads MFG & PLATED BY REED & BARTON 468. The number 2 on the base has been scratched.
MEASUREMENTS
5” (12.7 cm) wide x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) deep x 10 ¾” (27.3 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 5.9 oz (620 g)
CONDITION
Someone has spray painted a gold paint on the piece. The paint has lots of runs. This was probably done to add glitter to a piece that had no silver plate left. There is a nick on the top edge above the door. One back foot is slightly bent and so the piece does not rest totally flat.
A very unusual piece. It might have been used as a religious item or to burn incense in the home.
