Chinese Celadon Peach or Melon Republic Period

A molded porcelain peach or melon with applied leaves has been glazed with a celadon crackle and then fired. The glaze has nice pale blue primary crackle lines in the celadon matrix. The secondary lines are a darer greyish green. The glaze feels very smooth, thick and has a shiny appearance.

 

The base is glazed.  There are saggar marks on the flat base.

 

 

6” (15.2 cm) diameter x 5” (12.7 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 4.7 oz (585 g)

 

 

There are chips on the leaves. The lowest leaf has the largest two chips. Two leaves have broken and have been repaired.   There are chips on most of the leaves. I see no damage to the body of the fruit itself, although it does have a couple of tiny pin prick kiln flaws. The glaze has oxidized nicely from age and the base shows wear.

 

A decorative object with positive symbolism. The celadon glaze feels very soft and smooth.
