A very finely painted and thinly potted Chinese porcelain plate with a colorful scene of a scholar’s retreat near the mountains.

The plate has been painted with a design of a scholar and attendant traveling from a retreat near the mountains. There are mountains coming down to a harbor with ships. The buildings are surrounded by trees, one of which is in bloom. The painting is very fine with good line quality. The border is of dots and darts in colored enamels.

The plate is very thinly potted and when held to a light you can see the translucency. It has an unglazed foot and a glazed base. The word CHINA is painted on the base in iron red. The plate dates from between 1891 and about 1920.

We have two more identical plates that we have not yet listed. If you are interested in the others, please let us know.
