A shallow antique Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl with a phoenix and peony flowers.
 
The heavy porcelain bowl has a hand painted design of a flying phoenix next to a garden with peonies in bloom. The cobalt used is a medium blue and shows some cobalt explosions. The background white glaze has a blue tint. The back is decorated with leaves.
 
The foot is shallow, cut, rounded and unglazed. You can see the nice white clay of the body. There is a cobalt maker's mark within a square in the center of the base. Several ownership marks are also scratched on the base.

MEASUREMENTS
 
9 5/8” (24.4 cm) diameter x 2” (5.1 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 10.1 oz (740 g)
 
CONDITION
 
There are no breaks. chips. cracks. or repairs. There are customary kiln flaws, such as black spots, and pin hole reserves. There is wear to the surfaces from age and use, as well as some discoloration to the glaze on the outside of the bowl. As mentioned previously, some owner’s marks have been scratched on the base.
