A colorful and hand painted Kutani covered bowl from the Meiji period (late 19th C/ early 20th C) with a design of a bird in spring with a noble in a courtyard. There is much minute painting.

The thinly potted porcelain bowl with a matching fitted lid has been painted in traditional Kutani colors of iron red and gold. The lid has fabric like designs and a gilt and red finial. The mouth rim, and the lid flange are unglazed. The shallow foot is also unglazed. The base is glazed and unmarked.

MEASUREMENTS

4” (10.2 cm) diameter x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) tall. Weighs 7.6 oz (215 g)

CONDITION

There are no chips, cracks, or breaks. There is wear in the very bottom on the well. There is light wear to the gilding on the lid and exterior. There are kiln flaws, such as pin hole, black spots and a glaze misses. The most prominent miss is on one of the fans on the lid.

A very finely painted Kutani bowl that is highly decorative. I love the tiny tracery paintings of branches.
