A large and well-detailed Japanese redware dragon vase with shi shi lion handles.

The sides of the red ware clay vase has an undulating molded three-clawed dragon flying through clouds. Along the mouth is a band of raised floral mon. The handles are in the shape of protective Buddhist lions. You can see the clay that was molded around them to add to the vase neck. The handles have holes in them, that may have once been used with cords. The vase has a slight raised flat foot. There are some faint black marks on the bottom that I can’t make out.

MEASUREMENTS

12 ¼” (31.1 cm) tall x 7” (17.8 cm) wide x 6” (15.2 cm) diameter. Weighs 1 lb 12.9 oz (820 g)

CONDITION

There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. There are a few white spots that are probably from mineral deposits. There is some staining from age, especially around the shoulder. This could probably be cleaned off with the right cleaner.

A large handmade Japanese vase to add a rich earthy tone to the home décor.
