A very large (nearly 18” diameter) Japanese porcelain Imari charger with very colorful designs.

The charger has blue underglaze and polychrome overglaze enamels with alternating reserves of Buddhist lions and cranes in a pine tree. The central medallion is of chrysanthemums. Gilding is used extensively to accent the designs.

There is a shallow rounded, unglazed foot. The base is glazed and has four saggar marks. There are quick cobalt floral motifs on the underside. The charger has no hallmarks or labels.

MEASUREMENTS

17 ¾” (45.1 cm) diameter x 2 ½” (6.4 cm) tall. Weighs 7 lbs 6.0 oz (3345 g)

CONDITION

There are no cracks, chips, or breaks, and the charger rings like a bell. There are scratches to the well, as well light to moderate wear to the gilding. The enamels are still quite bright. There are manufacturer flaws, such as smudges, black spots, reserve pin holes, and bumps.

The very large and colorful Japanese work of art that that is easy to spot from across a room.
