A hand thrown and hand painted Qing era ginger jar with an artistic design of a bird perched in a tree with a peony in bloom.
The cobalt under glaze is a very deep blue with paler shades. The foot is unglazed, shallow, and has a slight channel in it. The base is glazed and is decorated with a double blue circle. It has an old Republic era ornately=carved wood lid that is now without stain. The lid has an old Hong Kong red and white paper label.
7” (17.8 cm) tall with lid. 4 7/8” (12.4 cm) tall without lid. 4 ¼” (10.8 cm) diameter. Weighs 15.2 oz (435 g)
There are no cracks, chips, breaks, or repairs. The surface shows little wear. There are kiln flaws, such as black spots, pin hole reserves, and a firing crack inside at the neck. The unglazed clay at the mouth has discolored from contact with the tannins in the wood lid over the years. Most of stain on the wood has either worn or bleached off from sun. Under the rim of the lid, remnants of the dark brown stain is visible.
