An antique bronze matchbox holder with pierced stone decoration. A pierced translucent pale green hardstone has been fairly roughly carved in the shape of a pheasant with plum blossoms. The green stone resembles jade and has some weight to it, but has no inclusions; we do not believe it’s jade. Under magnification, carving marks are visible.

A carved pierced oval carnelian button has been applied in the top center as a finial decoration. The box is made of a cast bronze with pierced sides and ends to hold a cardboard box of matches. One end is wider to allow access of the box in and out. The metal has a rich, dark natural patina from age. There is an old green felt on the back.

MEASUREMENTS

2 3/8” (5.9 cm) long x 1 ½” (3.8 cm) wide x 1 1/8” (2.9 cm) tall. Weighs 2.3 oz (60 g)

CONDITION

There are no chips or breaks in the stones. There is some green spotting of the metal, particularly along the edges. The metal is well oxidized, except along some corners, where brighter golden color shows through. The felt is worn. The carnelian is secured in only one place and so moves. The cement used to secure the pierced stone is visible through the holes.

An old piece to add to a collection or to store your matches.
