Chinese Wood Carving of Boy on Buffalo Republic Period

A large and intricately carved figure of a recumbent water buffalo and a farm boy riding it to the work in the field. The carving goes back to China’s farming heritage.

The wood is hard, heavy, and has a reddish color. There is much hand work with facial features, clothing, and even the hair on the water buffalo. The water buffalo has realistic glass eyes. Even the underside has been finished showing the hoof marks. I love the thin rope carving that goes from the buffalo’s mouth to the boy.

10” (25.4 cm) long x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) wide x 5” (12.7 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 5.4 oz (605 g)

There is a crack in the boy’s hand, and there are no other chips, cracks, or breaks. There is old glue underneath; It may have had a base at one time or just had pads to protect furniture that was glued on.

A great piece of antique Chinese carving. It will make a great display piece in the home.
