A huge decorative 19th Century French hand-painted fan with a design of tropical begonias, ferns and butterflies and edged with a lovely lace. This decorative cloth and lace portion is secured to wood and celluloid staves to form a fan.
The fan is mounted on a brown velvet enclosed within a demi lune frame with a glass front. The frame has been washed with sage green paint and then antiqued with another color that resembles a bronze verdigris. The back is a brown paper. A label on the back reads John Green PICTURE FRAMING ARTISTS SUPPLIES 6741 BROCTON “ARCADE” RIVERSIDE CALIF. * OV4-8750
MEASUREMENTS
Including frame – 36” (91.4 cm) wide x 21 3/4” (55.2 cm) tall x 2” (5.1 cm) thick.
Fan alone - 28” (71.1 cm) wide x 14 ½” (36.8 cm) tall
Weighs 8 lbs 14 oz (4050 g)
CONDITION
There are a few rips in the lace at the top and the celluloid arm has become detached on one side. The main design is in very good condition with no tears, and colors is still very clear and bright. The lace has yellowed with age. The paper on the back is torn in places.
A large, framed artwork that will add to a Victorian or traditional aesthetic. I can especially imagine it hung above a doorway.
