Large Antique Buddha Head Lacquer and Wood 19th Century

A large (nearly 18 in tall) – and very old - hand carved Buddha Head with a serene calm, untroubled, tranquil and peaceful face. Based on the authentic wear to the wood and the lacquer, we’d estimate that the carving dates from at least the early 19th C, if not much older. When cleaning it, we discovered a fair amount of soot, indicating that the carving was likely actually used in a temple.

 

The head was carved from a single block of soft wood and then coated in a reddish lacquer, which has peeled naturally. Buddha is depicted with a broad face and nose, elongated ears, and without a topknot. Based on the style and carving, we believe the carving is either from Nepal or Tibet.

 

The base is mostly flat and shows the hollow center with the tree rings surrounding it.

 

 

17 ¾” (45.1 cm) tall x 11 7/8” (30.2 cm) wide x 9 ½” (24.1 cm) deep. Weighs 9 lbs 11 oz (4400 g)

 

 

There are lacquer losses and cracks in the wood. These show age and use. The losses are irregular and authentic.

 

A very large head of the Buddha that will add a note of serenity and age to the home. He will definitely make a visual statement.
